The year 2012 may be remembered as the return of the male...well, perhaps not, but the top 3 of the year are male-only acts and 5 of the top 10. Part of this is due to the resurgence of bands such as Journey, and Daughtry; the continuing dominance of Shinedown; and excellent new work from bands like Sonata Arctica and Gothminister, among others. Within Temptation placed another song at #1, tying them for most #1s from a single album with Daughtry (5). However, Daughtry's record gave them 10 weeks at #1, while WT stayed atop for 16. Other bands who did well in 2012 include Evanescence, Nemesea, and November-7. 2012 may also be the year of the high debut, too, with 7 songs beginning their trek up the chart by landing in the top 10. There were several surprise #1s, too, like Journey's monster hit "Resonate" (#2 for the year); British all-female string quartet Escala teamed up with American guitar legend Slash on an instrumental cover of "Kashmir"; and Kazakh virtuosos Ulytau gave us a rousing cover of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue." Tarja earned her very first #1 in 2012, alongside The Scorpions, who broke the bad news that they were all retiring. By the end fo teh year, the musical landscape had changed further with Nightwish's "Imaginaerum" movie being released to accolades along with the soundtrack, and then having the band dump Anette Olzon as singer. After two more lead vocalists, chart faves Elis decided to pack it in, only to rise with 4 members of the band as "Zirkonium." Theory of a Deadman teamed up with former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi to make a hit out of the tune for the children's song "The Cat Came Back." And in perhaps the strangest development of the year, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne became engaged. Question mark, question mark, W-T-F? |
