I came to the site last week and also wanted to respond to Dave's comments. I agree with Dette entirely - this site is for memories of Craig. We all want to look at the site and smile and remember and perhaps cry when we read other peoples memories of Craig. Please do not use the site that Melanie set up for your personal vendetta against her. Craig was a really wonderful, sensitive, caring man and he certainly would want all of us to care about and treat with respect and kindness those that are living. Merry Christmas to all. Craig, we miss you lots. Love Jodi, Murray, Breanna and Hunter

It's been a couple of months since I've visited this site, and I just have to say to the previous author "Dave", It was in very poor taste to air your grievances about Melanie on a memorial site for Craig. Anyone who knew them as a couple, I'm sure shares my opinion. Just because Melanie has moved on with her life, doesn't mean that she has ever stopped MISSING AND LOVING Craig. I think there are more important things that can be said on this site. Having said that, Let me just say that all of us here in Calgary wish those of you who were near and dear to Craig, a very Merry Christmas. God Bless.

It's unreal how much I miss Craig. So many things have happened (both bad and thankfully mostly good) that I would've liked to have shared with my old roommate/boss/friend/pal/etc.... I've gone through a divorce (soon after, and most definately affected by Craig's death) a new marriage, and a baby due in April. The divorce although at the time was extremely hard, has come full circle, and I'm very thankful for the experience. The divorce itself was pretty smooth and amicable, but I think the fact that we realized how short life can be, and how much you should value each day made us realize that you should never "just settle". My exwife and I were both very close to Craig (in fact wouldn't have got together if it wasn't for Craig) and share tons of fond memories of the old gang. Some things have definately torn members of the old gang apart from each other (for some obvious reasons), however there is still much love and respect for the core of us. The golf tournament a few months ago was a classic case, as was Danielle's daughter's second birthday last weekend. Some of the other members of the core group have shown their true selves and have tried to destroy everything that Craig stood for. (as a side note, Melanie won't be receiving too many Xmas cards from the Vancouver area). It blows me away how fake some people are, and how they'll smile at you while they're stabbing you in the back. Anyways... I'm very thankful to have met Craig (and was surprised as hell when he asked me to move into the Maitland house with him and Larry). I learned a lot of life's lessons in that house (and some of them were positive!!!), and am very proud to have been able to call Craig a friend. I hope my unborn child will possess some of the great qualities that Craig had. If it's a boy, the word Craig may very well end up being part of his name. I'd also like to say that Bill and Chris are two of the most outstanding people i've ever met. They raised Craig to be a top notch individual, and because of Craig's passing, have become top notch volunteers'fund raisers for Leukemia. ...enough rambling, although I could talk about Craig (and do) for days... Merry Christmas Craig, Dave 12/13/02

I find it hard to believe that 3 years have past since Craig left us. In my mind I can still see his beautiful smile as though he was just in the room. Many things have happened in the last 3 years that I wish he were here to share. I know that he would have been very pleased to know that our good friends Jodi and Murray had a baby boy (Hunter) this year on his birthday. (As you can imagine I will be spoiling this child rotten, much to his parents dismay)I wish he could be here to enjoy our crochet games on hot Saturday afternoons. With the one little rule we threw in being you must have a beer in one hand whenever it is your turn. This is a rule I could have seen him starting, but knowing his competitive nature he still would have tried to kick everyone butt. Where ever Craig is, I hope he is smiling down on us. There is a small comfort in believing that beautiful smile is still there, lighting up the heavens.

I never met Craig. I have never heard of him before today. I wondered onto this website by complete curiosity. Nothing is chance. Though I never met him in person, I have heard all of your testimonys, and I want to express my deepest condolences. I feel like I know him through your kind words. I shed tears in hearing of the love the living feels for the deceased. Craig must of known how much you all loved him. All the things I've learned in life can be summed up in three words: It goes on.

For those of us who had the opportunity to meet such a kindred soul, we are truly blessed. Althought we may not have known Craig for a long period of time, we cherish the few years that we shared and are thankful for the memories made. Craig never missed an opportunity to entertain. or make someone smile and laugh, and for me, that's what sticks out the most in my mind, is seeing him smile that mischievous grin and waiting with anticipation to see what that boy was up to next. He displayed warmth, courage, stamina, a desire for life and living it to the fullest and an abundance of love for people and animals and we're just very honoured to say that Craig was a part of our lives. even though it was just for a few years. his memory will last a lifetime, we applaud his parents for raising such a wonderful man, and share in their grief.

I hope that the poem I've written has inspired someone else to express their feelings for their loss.

Where went his life
why did he leave us
to miss him so.........

Does he now smile upon us
has his pain all now gone.
Oh, how we miss him
our dear friend of so long

Do his eyes again sparkle
Have his tears ceased to fall
does he know how much we loved him
and how he inspired us all

To live life to the fullest
as we do not know its end
the cherish time with family
and cherish time with friends

Cheers up to the heavens
where you shine so bright
Sweet memories remain
sweet dreams in the night.

Love
Dette and Lyle

Regretfully, we didn't have the pleasure of knowing Craig for as long or as well as most. We met him on a few occasions before he and Melanie left Vancouver for Airdrie, and hosted a going away party for them, but it was not until their return to Vancouver that we were really able to get to know him. I was immediately struck by his intelligence and entertained by his cheeky and incredibly dry sense of humour, and had a feeling that he preferred to spend his time and devote his energy to people and things that were really important to him. There is an incident in particular that I shall never forget...one that showed the side of Craig that was so very tender and caring. On the occasion of our 25th Wedding Anniversary, our children and friends threw a surprise party for John and I, to which Craig and Mel had been invited. We had a wonderful evening and the following week was spent writing thank you cards to all who attended. Within a few days, WE received a thank you card in the mail, a card that I can still picture today. On the front was a large bunch of multicoloured balloons, and inside, a beautifully hand written note from Craig in which HE thanked US for being included in our celebration and for our friendship. It was a very, very special gesture that meant more than words can express. I've thought of it often throughout these past years, and it will remain, for me, an especially warm remembrance of an extremely special young man who touched many in his much too short life. I've always wanted to share this memory with his family....Now I have

Happy Valentines Day Craig. One of the fondest memories I have of Valentines Day happened the year before Craig's passing. Craig was never big on Valentines Day, or any traditional holidays for that matter. I usually whined and complained because I would go out and get him a card and he almost never even remembered. But this particular year he had remembered and made a special effort to get me a Valentines Day card. All proud of himself, he handed me the card and I handed him mine. He insisted that I open mine first, so I did. But my facial expression was not what he had expected. I thanked him and told him to go ahead and open his. His face was priceless. We had bought the exact same cards for each other. Basically saying the reason we loved one another is because we were nuts!!!!! He couldn't believe that out of all the cards out there, we picked the same one. We laughed so hard that tears rolled down our faces. Craig said it was meant to be. And that is the way I still feel. No matter what happens in my life he was always meant to be. I am thankful for the 6+ years that I had with him. He enriched all of our lives and we will carry his wisdom and love with us forever. I love you and will miss your smile always

Just to follow Danielle and Vikki, I felt the need to add something. Craig, wow, I still can't believe that he is gone. I look at his picture every day and thank god that i knew him, even if it was such a short time. When I think of Craig the picture that immediately comes to mind is one with his blue eyes staring at me. When I first met him that stare would intimidate me. Knowing Craig later he was the sweetest, most sarcasticly funny, good looking guy I knew. His laughter alone would make other people laugh, you knew it came from his gut.He loved to tease me endlessly, if I made a silly mistake that he thought was funny, he would be relentless at making jokes about it!!I miss that. Since Craigs' death his friends in Vancouver started to play golf in his memory, none of us are good, I'm sure he's shaking his head in dispair wondering why we are butchering the game he loved so much! But it makes us feel as though we are close to him, well that's how it makes me feel. I wish I could have played a game with him, what a laugh we would of had.Because of Craig I try to live my life differently, the circle of friends we have in Vancouver have a special bond and talk frequently about him. He is never forgotten. Spending time with Craigs parents I know now where he got his sense of humor, his caring so much for other people, his love of music and golf. Both his parents are the best people anybody can meet, and my heart aches for them for their loss.Anyway I could go on forever about how much he is missed, how much we all have changed because of him, how much we love him. You will NEVER be forgotten! Love

Well, I figured I would take Vicki's lead and add my part. My memories of Craig are still quite fresh in my heart as is the horrible illness that took his life so early. I am reminded of him every day as I have a picture of him in my living room from the days when he was healhy and happy. It is because of Craig that when I found out I was pregnant, Mike and I decided to have the baby's umbilical cord blood drawn at the time of birth and then frozen for possible future use. This blood contains stem cells that can be used for bone marrow transplants and many other treatments should our daughter become sick. This procedure is quite expensive but I feel it is worth every penny because I know that Craig's parents would have spent every last dime they had to keep Craig alive. We are fortunate to have this procedure available to us and I am hoping that other people look into this before giving birth so that another life doesn't have to be taken so soon. Now that Madeline is here, I understand the love between a mother and a child. It is the strongest love there is. I can partially understand how Craig's parents must feel now that he is gone but at least they felt that love and that bond for 29 years. Some people never get to feel that love at all. I wish Craig were here to meet Madeline, I konw he would have loved her - how can you not (brag, brag). But a little piece of Craig will always be with Maddie because if it wasn't for him we never would have known about the banking of unbilical cord blood. Thank you Craig!! We miss you.

....that"something is missing" a falsehood? I don't think so, I think that this is just the way it is and will always be. We will continue to cope in the ways that we have accustom ourselves to. Many things have happened in the last two years, some so very excellent (births, home purchases etc.) and many awful things as well. The paths we have taken are all so very different, the tie that bound is gone. But one thing is certain, that I can say without a doubt, for everyone, You are so very much missed, and so very much much loved. After I read an e-mail we recently received I thought that maybe it was about time someone posted something subsequential to this site that actually pertains to our very loved, very missed friend... Two years and four months later and still feeling as tender as if the wound happened only yesterday. Questions for Craig Is it possible that we romantize the person you were? A beautiful, fun loving, athletic, talented, truthful, caring, honest, trustworthy, grounded, stable, analytical, funny, gentle, thoughtful, generous man. Are our memories convoluted and murky?. Are we only seeing only what we want to? Like the time... (fill with your favorite memories) Is the continual dull ache and the hole in our hearts just figments of our imagination? Is the fact that we go about our lives with the vague notion that

We have many memories of Craig's 29 years with us from his first unaided steps at the age of ten months on the B C ferry from Victoria to his final round of golf at Quilchena Golf & Country Club,Craigs course since he was 14,when weakend by treatment and his Bone Marrow Transplant he still had a par 4 on the most difficult hole on the course. His fighting spirit and tremendous courage were with him throughout his 16 month battle with Leukemia. Since "our big guy" left us on October 2nd 1998 there have been many tributes and memorials to Craig. There are Memorial benches at Minoru Park and Quilchena Golf Club in Righmond. Memorial long drive contests (Craig was reknowed for his long hitting)at Quilchena and the Sharon O'Brien Golf Tournament to raise money for Leukemia Research. This year both events were won by the same young golfer and the length of his drives would have tested even Craig's prowess. The Western Music Association in Calgary have also named their Long Drive Trophy in Craig's memory. Last year the Leukemia Research Fund of Canada BC Region honoured Craig by placing his photograph and short bio on the back of their Christmas Cards. Many of these Cards were purchased by family in Canada & Scotland and many more by friends and corporate friends. At Vancouver General Hospital's D10 Outpatients Clinic for Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplants there is an Ice/Water machine donated in his Memory and Craig's name is permanently on the "Tributes Wall" in the Hospital's Main Entrance. Many of Craig's friends have kept in touch with us,his Mum & Dad,and have supported LRFC Fundraising events such as the Mountain Express Run & the Sharon O'Brien Golf Tournament both by participating and volunteering. Craig would have been pleased that Mark,Vikki,Sindi&Dave have decided to take up golf and would also have been amused at some of their efforts. However the main thing is that they are keen to try and determined to succeed. This August at the Edmonton Marathon associated with TNT(another LRFC Event)Susan Calder (One of Craig's three adopted cousins)ran 50k and raised $2700 in Craig's memory. Last year and again this year on Craig's birthday his friends met at his Memorial Wall at Victory Park with flowers and plants and then went to dinner to remember the "Big Guy". Leukemia is a terrible disease and attacks both children and adults. The LRFC of Canada,BC Region raises funds for research and in Craig's memory we have decided to be involved in helping raise these funds. With the help and participation of family, friends and corporate friends more than $50,000 has been raised to date and we are sure Craig would have been proud of everyone's efforts. One day a cure will be found and others will not have to suffer as Craig did. At a later date we will share some stories of Craig's earlier years.

Well, as many of you can guess, I have many happy memories of Craig. His twisted sense of humour, his love of music, his enthusiasm for hockey and golf and his mile long stubborn streak. All the things that made him the wonderful person he was. There are so many stories to share about Craig that I am not even sure where to begin. I think the best place to start is with all of you, his friends and family. From time to time I will add a funny story or an unknown fact about him. But I hope that all of you will enjoy this site to remember the man with the big heart and the infectious smile. It is a place to share stories and thoughts of all kinds. We will add more pictures as time goes on and if you have a picture you would like to add, feel free to send it to me and I will add it in. So let the stories begin and let us keep his spirit alive.
